There are various types of excursions you can take to the Perito Moreno Glacier, among others, near Calafate. Here is a list of what is available:
Trip to Perito Moreno
The area, located 50 miles from Calafate, can be reached by car, excursion or by a transfer service from El Calafate. These transfers depart two times a day during the summer and allow visitors three hours to enjoy the glacier. There is a snack bar where you can have lunch or a quick bite.
By land: The Perito Moreno Glacier can be seen and enjoyed by footbridges that were expanded and remodeled in 2008. In total there are 4,000 meters of viewpoints where you can appreciate the ice mass from different angles.
By water: For those looking for closer proximity to the glacier, you can contract short excursions that border the southern and northern faces of the glacier. The excursions last between one and two hours.
The mini trekking excursion is the most popular for those wanting to really feel this natural phenomenon up close. The tour crosses Lake Rico by boat and then takes you on a two hour walk over the ice with the help of crampons. The trek is moderately difficult, making it accessible to the entire public. During the trek you will be able to appreciate diverse ice formations and incredible fans of bluish tones. The trek is topped off with a whiskey drink cooled by a bit of glacier ice.
For those with truly adventurous spirits and a desire to visit some of the most remote areas of the glacier, the Big Ice adventure is for them (as long as they are capable of the intense physicality of the excursion). This demanding, six-hour trek over the ice takes you to discover deep crevices, caves and unbelievable blue lagoons. It is extremely necessary to wear the appropriate clothing such as waterproof clothing, good trekking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect from the reflection of the sunlight on the ice. Organizers of this excursion do not allow people over 45 years of age to participate.
Visit the Spegazzini, Onelli and Upsala Glaciers
To have a clear idea of the size of the park and its glaciers, it is ideal to navigate around the park at least once. This way you get a completely different point of view from the one obtained at the Perito Moreno Glacier. Travel the northern arm of Lake Argentino and into the bays formed by the Spegazzini, Onelli and Upsala glaciers. At Onelli Bay you can descend in order to enjoy a nice lunch and later trek through the woods to Lake Onelli, fed by ice floes of the Onelli, Agazzis and Bolado Glaciers. This trek can be done from October to April and lasts all day.
Cristina Lodge Excursion
This tour combines water and land and departs from Punta Bandera, navigates through the northern stretch of Lake Argentino, then crosses the Upsala Canal until reaching the eastern wall of the glacier. Afterwards, the trip continues through the Cristina channel and close to midday you disembark at the Estancia, the best terrestrial access point to the Upsala Glacier and Continental Ices. At the lodge you have the opportunity to go trekking, horseback riding, enjoy a Patagonian lunch and visit the small museum. Additionally, you have the option of spending the night there in the lap of luxury.
Mar Patag Cruise
This mini cruise lasts two days and one night and gives you a truly intimate experience with the glaciers. The cruise departs from Punta Bandera and reaches Avellaneda along the northern stretch of Lake Argentino, then crosses the Upsala Canal, navigates through icebergs and later approaches the glacier. You can enjoy the sunset in front of the Spegazzini Glacier and spend the night at Puesto Vacas. In the morning you then navigate through Canal de Los Témpanos “Iceberg Channel” until you reach the Perito Moreno Glacier and have lunch in Alemana Bay before returning to Punta Bandera in the afternoon.
