Argentina is a fabulous location for cruises and boat excursions. Below we give you a list of a few possibilities:
Deep blues and magical forests

Sailing excursions depart from Puerto Blest in Bariloche and cross Lake Nahuel Huapi until reaching Victoria Island. This area attracts visitors with forests full of 300-year old myrtle trees bearing soft, cinnamon-colored trunks and reaching 82 feet high. You can also reach Victoria Island by departing from Villa la Angostura and sailing along a different area of the lake.

The international crossing of the Andean lakes is an option that combines sailing with land tours until reaching Puerto Montt in Chile.

Lake Lacar, located at the foot of the picturesque town of San Martín de los Andes, impresses visitors with its clear waters and offers various boat trips that canvas its shores in order to discover islands, forests, waterfalls and landscapes of unique beauty.

Near Junín de los Andes it is also possible to sail on Lake Huechulafquen with the impressive Lanin Volcano towering in the background.

Meanwhile, Lakes Moquehue and Aluminé, at the foot of the Andes Mountains, offer tantalizing trips that combine wondrous landscapes with water sports.

Sail between giants

In the province of Santa Cruz, located inside the Glaciers National Park, is the Perito Moreno Glacier. Different boats ply the waters of Lake Argentino, sail through the Iceberg Channel en route to the imposing glacier and allow visitors to experience one of the most extraordinary natural events of the region. Boats depart the Puerto de Bahía Tunnel in El Chalten toward the Viedma Glacier. This tour provides amazing views of Fitz Roy and Huemul Mountains. After passing Cape Horn, you are met with an impressive array of blue tones emanating from the Viedma Glacier. The Capri, Torre and Los Tres lagoons, in addition to Lake Desierto, fascinate visitors with their ice landscapes while the Fitz Roy and Torre Mountains impress with their granite facades.

Living sea

Different boats depart from Puerto Madryn or Puerto Pyramids in the Península Valdés and take tourists scuba diving or to witness the amazing spectacles offered by dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, sea lions and giant southern right whales that sweep the area between June and December.
The Atlantic coast of the Santa Cruz province offers interesting options for wildlife watching and observing splendid rock formations on sailings that depart from Puerto San Julian or Puerto Deseado.

Boat tour to the end of the earth

Ushuaia is the arrival point for cruise ships traveling from different parts of the world. Once there, different boats depart toward the Beagle Channel, Isla de los Pájaros, Isla de los Lobos, Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse and the Islotes Bridges.
Sea lovers can embark on the Australis Cruise, awarded as the best trip in South America according to National Geographic Traveler. This luxury cruise takes you through majestic and pristine landscapes, allows you to admire rich wildlife including penguins, sea lions, elephant seals and dolphins and takes you along the same paths traveled by legendary figures such as Magellan, Darwin, Vespucci and Drake.
Another attraction in Ushuaia is the path taken to Lapataia Bay which begins in Puerto Arias within the Tierra del Fuego National Park and crosses various bays and islands.

Discover Antarctica

Ushuaia is also the departure point for cruises during November and March to Antarctica, land of ice and extreme natural scenery.

There are various types of excursions you can take to the Perito Moreno Glacier, among others, near Calafate. Here is a list of what is available:

Trip to Perito Moreno

The area, located 50 miles from Calafate, can be reached by car, excursion or by a transfer service from El Calafate. These transfers depart two times a day during the summer and allow visitors three hours to enjoy the glacier. There is a snack bar where you can have lunch or a quick bite.
By land: The Perito Moreno Glacier can be seen and enjoyed by footbridges that were expanded and remodeled in 2008. In total there are 4,000 meters of viewpoints where you can appreciate the ice mass from different angles.

By water: For those looking for closer proximity to the glacier, you can contract short excursions that border the southern and northern faces of the glacier. The excursions last between one and two hours.

By ice:

The mini trekking excursion is the most popular for those wanting to really feel this natural phenomenon up close. The tour crosses Lake Rico by boat and then takes you on a two hour walk over the ice with the help of crampons. The trek is moderately difficult, making it accessible to the entire public. During the trek you will be able to appreciate diverse ice formations and incredible fans of bluish tones. The trek is topped off with a whiskey drink cooled by a bit of glacier ice.

For those with truly adventurous spirits and a desire to visit some of the most remote areas of the glacier, the Big Ice adventure is for them (as long as they are capable of the intense physicality of the excursion). This demanding, six-hour trek over the ice takes you to discover deep crevices, caves and unbelievable blue lagoons. It is extremely necessary to wear the appropriate clothing such as waterproof clothing, good trekking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect from the reflection of the sunlight on the ice. Organizers of this excursion do not allow people over 45 years of age to participate.

Visit the Spegazzini, Onelli and Upsala Glaciers

To have a clear idea of the size of the park and its glaciers, it is ideal to navigate around the park at least once. This way you get a completely different point of view from the one obtained at the Perito Moreno Glacier. Travel the northern arm of Lake Argentino and into the bays formed by the Spegazzini, Onelli and Upsala glaciers. At Onelli Bay you can descend in order to enjoy a nice lunch and later trek through the woods to Lake Onelli, fed by ice floes of the Onelli, Agazzis and Bolado Glaciers. This trek can be done from October to April and lasts all day.

Cristina Lodge Excursion
This tour combines water and land and departs from Punta Bandera, navigates through the northern stretch of Lake Argentino, then crosses the Upsala Canal until reaching the eastern wall of the glacier. Afterwards, the trip continues through the Cristina channel and close to midday you disembark at the Estancia, the best terrestrial access point to the Upsala Glacier and Continental Ices. At the lodge you have the opportunity to go trekking, horseback riding, enjoy a Patagonian lunch and visit the small museum. Additionally, you have the option of spending the night there in the lap of luxury.

Mar Patag Cruise
This mini cruise lasts two days and one night and gives you a truly intimate experience with the glaciers. The cruise departs from Punta Bandera and reaches Avellaneda along the northern stretch of Lake Argentino, then crosses the Upsala Canal, navigates through icebergs and later approaches the glacier. You can enjoy the sunset in front of the Spegazzini Glacier and spend the night at Puesto Vacas. In the morning you then navigate through Canal de Los Témpanos “Iceberg Channel” until you reach the Perito Moreno Glacier and have lunch in Alemana Bay before returning to Punta Bandera in the afternoon.

The National Geographic Traveler magazine created a list of the most impressive trips around the world called “Tours of a Lifetime”. In the Central and South American category the Australis Cruise from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas was chosen as the first place winner.

The publication highlights the impeccable style of the vessels, Via Australis, Mare Australis and Stella Australis (launching at the end of this year), which have a capacity for 130- 210 passengers, with panoramic windows in all of the cabins and a variety of wines included in the price of the trip.

The magazine also details the Australis Cruises’ route from Ushuaia in Argentina to Punta Arenas in Chile (and vice-versa). During the trip, passengers enjoy informative talks provided by guides specializing in Patagonia, while navigating through the fjords, glaciers and the Beagle Canal, all visited by Darwin before making his way to the Galapagos Islands.
