Here is another post in the “Trips to Argentina” series focused on Northern Argentina which includes the Catamarca, Jujuy, Salta, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán provinces. Visitors fall in love with this region for its unique combination of nature, gastronomy and aboriginal cultures. The Inca culture survives today in its inhabitants and is manifested in the architecture, handicrafts, customs and religious activities that mix both pagan and Catholic beliefs.
Quebrada de Humahuaca located in Jujuy is a vast Andean valley with amazing tonalities. The slow rhythm of its small adobe towns tucked in the mountains give the area a unique and fascinating character.
Purmamarca is located at the foot of the Siete Colores (Seven-Color) and Tilcara mountains. Its pre-Columbian fortress, carnival celebrations and veneration of Pacha Mama are gems worth seeing.
Salta has an interesting architectural and archaeological heritage to visit. Its urban landscape is outlined by colonial houses, museums and churches and its narrow streets are framed by the Andes. Other activities include enjoying traditional cuisine and regional wines, attend “peñas” (folkloric musical and dance shows) and shop for textiles and handicrafts.
The Calchaquíes Valley is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon of Colorado because of its colors and shapes. The beautiful scenery inspires mountain climbing, mountain biking, visiting vineyards, going on photo safaris and observing native flora and fauna.
The main town is Cafayate, where some of the best wineries in the world can be found and where the famous wine “Torrontés” is produced.
In Molinos you can find some of the best textiles made by loom. Here they sell ponchos and the famous “barracán”. Cachi boasts beautifully colored mountains, dotted by the Calchaquí River, surrounded by hundreds of archeological sites and guarded by the snow capped peak that bears its name and reaches 30,000 feet.
Las Salinas Grandes is a stunning expanse of white horizon. Here, the sun varies the colors of the landscape and one can still observe ancient salt extraction techniques.
